Dean of Faculty of Medicine of Ukrainian Medical Stomatological/ Dental Academy (PSMU): Ryabushko M. M., Doctor of Medical Sciences, assistant professor of Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology of Clinical Immunology and Allergology.
He was born in 1963 in the village of Panchenko Lebedinskogo district, Sumy region. In 1985 he graduated from the Natural Sciences Sumy State Pedagogical Institute named after Makarenko A.S. From 1985 to 1990 he worked as a teacher and director of the school. From 1990 to 1991 was elected the first secretary of Sumy region. From 1991 to 1997 he studied at Ukrainian Medical Stomatological/Dental Academy at Faculty of Medicine. In 1998 he graduated from the Ukrainian Medical Stomatological/Dental Academy in the field of therapy. Since 1998 he has been working at Ukrainian Medical Stomatological/Dental Academy as Assistant Professor, and since 2003 as Associate Professor of Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology at PSMU. In 2002 he defended his thesis on: "Medical-prophylactic effectiveness of natural sorbent and antioxidants in long-term flow of fluoride to the body” and received the title of Candidate of Medical Sciences. Ryabushko M. M. is the author of 18 scientific and methodological articles and 3 patents of Ukraine. The main orientation of scientific programs: Toxicology. Prevention. Antioxidants.
Duration of medical course at Ukrainian Medical Stomatological/Dental Academy is 6 years and leads to MD (Doctor of Medicine) or MBBS. During six years of study the students learn different subjects from fundamental subjects’ disciplines to special medical subjects. Because the class size is relatively small, our faculty members get to know each student. It is one thing to say that Ukrainian Medical Stomatological/Dental Academy has terrific people and programs and another to prove it.
Admission to the medical faculty takes place after signing the contract. Foreigners learn in groups of seven-eight students along with local students. The second year students attend their clinical studies where they can gain experience in nursing the patients. Clinical subjects are taught beginning from the third year of study. Students can study any topic of interest and to raise their knowledge in the departments. All six years of the program are important and all must be passed successfully before students are permitted to graduate.
The medium of instruction in the Medical faculty is English and Russian. The Ministry of education and Ministry of Public health of Ukraine approved the curriculum of the medical faculty. Most of the countries of the world accept Ukrainian Medical Stomatological/Dental Academy degree.
The state final examinations for all disciplines according to the syllabus are held within one system through 2 stages:
1. Testing practical proficiency of final-year students (when exams on clinical disciplines are taken, testing takes place at the patient's bed);
2. Testing scientific/theoretical proficiency.
Successful students, who complete five years of study, work for another year under probation after graduation in order to gain general registration. There is a wide range of specialization available in the public and private sectors, involving research, academic medicine, public health, clinical medicine and other areas. Specialties include Cardiology, Oncology, Pediatrics, Psychological Medicine, Surgery, Pathology, Public Health, General Practice and many others. Most doctors complete postgraduate training in chosen specialty.

History and Establishment of Faculty of Medicine
Considering the need in doctors in Poltava in 1971, Treatment (now Medical) department was opened on the basis of Poltava Medical Stomatological/Dental Institute. The first dean of the medical faculty was professor V.F. Postnikov (1971 - 1973), in a while Associate Professor V.I . Sanika (1973 - 1977) was appointed as Dean. These deans made great organizational work on the formation of personnel, organization of educational process. During its existence the Faculty has prepared nearly 8 thousand medical practitioners, surgeons, obstetricians - gynecologists, neuropathologists, eye doctors, urologists, infectious disease, many doctors of other specialties, not only for the Poltava region, but for all Ukraine, and for near and far abroad countries. Highly qualified specialists from other educational and medical institutions were invited 30 years ago to create the faculty. More than a quarter century on the faculty work professors: P.Y. Chumak, A.P. Gasyuk, G.T. Sonnyc, J.P. Kostylenko, E.A. Vorobyov, M.A. Dudchenko. During its existence the deans of the faculty were: V.P. Mishchenko (1977 - 979), Y.O. Maksymuk (1977 - 1983), J.P. Kostylenko (1986 - 1991), Associate Professor: S.A. Lagutin (1983 - 1986), V.M. Bobyrov (1991 - 1992), B.F. Chichi (1992 - 1993), I.P. Katerenchuk (1993 - 2001), B.P. Lysenko (2001 - 2002); G.M. Traverse (2002 - 2006), T.A. Krjuchko (2007).
There are 1221 students studying at the Faculty of Medicine of Ukrainian Medical Stomatological/Dental Academy, 769 students get state-funded education. Students are trained in General Medicine and in Pediatrics specialties at the Faculty of Medicine of Ukrainian Medical Stomatological/Dental Academy PSMU.
Teaching Staff of the Faculty of Medicine of Ukrainian Faculty of Ukrainian Medical Stomatological/Dental Academy: 281 teachers, including 53 Doctors of Medicine and Professors and 177 Candidates of Medical Science, Professors, among them - 7 Honored Scientist of Ukraine, 6 Honored doctors of Ukraine, 2 State Prize of Ukraine in Science and Technology, 27 academicians of specialized academies. Training is conducted in 23 departments. All clinical departments are headed by Professors, Doctors of Science.
The main focus of the faculty is to prepare highly skilled professionals, who perfectly know their work, that have highly basic and vocational training aimed at achieving high results in public health, the best educated specialists in the spirit of progress and achievements of world science and culture. Graduates of the faculty of Medicine of Ukrainian Medical Stomatological/Dental Academy receive state-recognized degree, which proves higher education in the field of General Medicine and Pediatrics.
The main strategic task of Faculty of Medicine of Ukrainian Medical Stomatological/Dental Academy is to train young generation, to make them capable of operating in a competitive environment of modern society. Therefore, since 2005 educational process and the course were started in accordance with the European standards of quality of specialists training by the Bologna Convention.
Such scientific and practical schools were formed as: Pathology (Head - Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor A.P. Gasyuk) Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology (Head - Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine, MD, professor Bobyrov Viktor), nervous diseases (Head - Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine, MD, professor Gritsay Natalya) Therapy (Head - Doctor of Medical Sciences, Katerenchuk Ivan), childhood diseases (Head - Doctor of Medical Sciences, Traverse G. M.). This provides research work while studying for Masters and postgraduate courses.
Material and technical base of the faculty
Faculty of Medicine has well established material base that fully supports the training in General Medicine and Pediatrics, and in general are suitable for training the specialists at the appropriate level. The Department has buildings, including three academic buildings, two dormitories, dining room, household building, vivarium, health and sports camp, total area is 29,677 square meters. Each student has 12.8 square meters for the educational process that meets the standards for the educational activity. Clinical Departments of the faculty are located in all provincial and municipal hospitals of Poltava, there are 6095 beds used in the educational process and provide practical training for students at the appropriate level. Clinical departments and therapeutic bases are equipped with modern diagnostic and medical equipment that enables making diagnosis and treatment on the modern level, using modern achievements in science.
Regional Diagnostic Center, center for study and testing of surgical implants and suture material, educational and consultative diabetes center, medical diagnostic science and rehabilitation Center, training and advisory Pulmonological Center, Gastroenterological Research and Consultation Center, Poltava regional center of cell and tissue therapy, neurophysiological laboratory, laboratory of manual therapy, Genetics and Reproduction Family Training Center, primary neonatal intensive care unit Center were created to conduct research and improve medical diagnostic help to the population.
The faculty of Medicine of Ukrainian Medical Stomatological/Dental Academy developed a computer-based training in computer classes, each belong to specialized departments. Various training activities are carried out with the help of personal computers of the departments. There operate modern computer classes and Internet-class, with free high-speed access to the Internet.
The faculty of Medicine of Ukrainian Medical Stomatological/Dental Academy uses modern multimedia technology training that can maximize the ways of information perception, bring the conditions close to real life daily activity of a physician. In the medical department stipulates the Methodology of the educational process has great role in the work of the faculty. Teachers introduce modern educational technologies, the latest educational achievements, new advanced technologies and treatment methods into the learning process.
One of the main challenges for the future specialist is level of his professional training in a competitive labor market. It encourages teachers to search intensive methods of teaching, improving the monitoring of student learning and preparing teaching documents, including the development of guidelines, manuals, complex programs for self-study. Teachers of the faculty successfully work to create training manuals in accordance with the curriculum and the current requirements issued by the State language. Widespread use of special and general subjects is reflected in the tutorials, created by teachers of the Faculty of Medicine of Ukrainian Medical Stomatological/Dental Academy . Large and productive work is done by the best teachers - methodists in establishing new programs in basic disciplines and adapting existing programs to the curriculum. Lectures and practical lessons are conducted with the help of multimedia programs, training videos, slides, codograms, visual aids and patients. The Library of the Academy plays a significant role in organization of educational work , provides students with training, background and technical literature. Library has 361,922 copies, including 12767 copies of textbooks.
Structure of the educational process
Training in the field of Medicine is carried out in accordance with the schedule of the educational process, which provides duration of the training sessions, dates of practices, examinations and state certification, vacations. Faculty of Medicine together with the administration of Ukrainian Medical Stomatological/Dental Academy created the objective conditions for educational work of adequate quality level by optimizing the method and content of training, increasing complexity and objectivity in the assessment of knowledge, improving material base of the educational process, its individualization, activation of education in the teaching process. The main bases for clinical practice are hospitals of Poltava and Poltava region, as well as regional centers of Ukraine. In general, clinical base meets the requirements, material, technical and methodological support for practices of all courses is at the appropriate level.
Students of the Faculty of Medicine of Ukrainian Medical Stomatological/Dental Academy actively participate in cultural and educational activities (Head – Sydorenko L.V. )There was created song ensemble "Malvy”, brass band and other student groups. On each course (especially on the faculty) traditionally teams of KVK are created. KVK team of the Faculty of Medicine of Ukrainian Medical Stomatological/Dental Academy “FILINZ” is the winner of the student league of KVN of Ukraine, winner of the festival fun and smart clubs ”Pearl of the seaside – 2005”. There are numerous sport sections on the basis of department of physical education.
For good results and active participation in students life students can get appreciation, rewards, higher scholarships, become a scholar of the President of Ukraine and Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, and students of state-financed education with high results have the right to choose the desired workplace at the end of the study . Students of the faculty of Medicine create and actively work in community organizations of the Academy: student councils, student parliament, trade union committees.
Necessary social and living conditions for training, accommodation, medical care, nutrition and physical improvement of the students are created. Students of the faculty of Medicine live in 2 dormitories total area of which is 11,684 square meters (living area of 5703 square meters). Hostel № 4 has an area of 1604 square meters, where the department of physical education and health is situated. There are 4 gyms. Students and faculty staff have an opportunity in their free time to train in extra spacious gyms, improve their physical condition on modern bikes. All dormitories of the Academy are provided with soft and hard inventory and a laundry. Students are served in canteen and 3 diners for 318 seats. During summertime the academy provides health and sports camp for 100 students, staff and teachers, located in the beautiful suburban area.
There are 11 students-orphans, who are fully state-financed, 28 students - victims of the Chernobyl accident and 19 students with disabilities. Such students have the right to extraordinary settlement in a dormitory and receive additional scholarship. Once a year students should pass medical examination to detect clinical patients, who have the opportunity to receive trip tickets for rest in a student’s camp.
